3 Reasons why BYOD is proving popular in the recruitment workplace
As technology around us changes at a rapid pace, many companies are encouraging staff in one of the latest employee-led trends to bring your own device (BYOD) like smart phones, tablets and laptops, in order to access company information.
According to a global survey of CIOs by Gartner, 38 per cent of companies expect to stop providing devices to workers by 2016, and further, Gartner predicts that by 2017 half of employers will require employees to supply their own device for work purposes.
BYOD is thought to be an innovative way of increasing productivity and efficiencies whilst reducing costs for the business and so we’ve listed a few of the benefits associated with a BYOD program:
#1 increased productivity. Your staff are likely to be experts on their own devices and as a result will be more productive working on devices that they like and are familiar with. They are also likely to do a little extra work outside of office hours, being able to continue their work in the comfort of their own home instead of stopping once they leave the office for the day.
#2 cost savings. Technology can be a huge cost to the company, however with BYOD programs, this cost shifts from the company to the user. With ever-changing technology, it can be an expensive game for a company to keep up with the latest gadgets. The users themselves are more likely to upgrade or use more advanced equipment than that supplied by the IT department. There’s also likely to be an increased lifespan of devices since they’ll view them as their own property and be more likely to handle them with greater care.
#3 employee satisfaction. By having flexible IT policies such as BYOD in place, companies provide a convenient way of working so become far more attractive to jobseekers. It’s an effective way to retain and recruit talented people in the “war for talent”. Staff also like not having to carry around multiple devices, or having to switch between work and personal devices so everything is in one place.
There is a risk associated with such a change in IT policy though. A review should take place of the personal/enterprise costs and controls over the various types of hand set and software that your IT estate will need to be able to handle. However, with BYOD being one of the biggest trends in the employment landscape today, it’s not going anywhere, and is on the increase.
